Ostend has a new figurehead: The Ostendian, a four-star hotel that is more than just a place to stay. It is a vibrant ode to the city, built on vision, collaboration and a distinct sense of atmosphere as well as rock 'n' roll.
At the press event on 27 March, The Ballroom - the stylish breakfast room cum event venue - was almost bursting at the seams. The space breathed a salty, vibrant atmosphere. Two bands performing covers of Ostend artists such as Arno immediately set the tone. Mayor Bart Tommelein and other speakers underlined the importance of this new hotel for the city.
An initiative of C-Hotels and Real Estate Group Degroote, The Ostendian is the first completely new hotel to be added to Ostend in 25 years. Strategically located in the Sky District - between railway station and marina - the hotel has 113 rooms, including four thematic suites that reflect Ostend's DNA: quirky, artistic and generous.
One such room was completely designed by Herr Seele, who transformed a suite into an art room with his striking hand. The result is a place you not only enter, but also experience - in every line, colour and wink.
What makes The Ostendian unique is its conscious anchoring in local culture. The branding was developed by The Brand Guys, the interior worked out to the last detail by Ostend design studio BLCN DESIGN. Materials, colours and accents bring the outdoor feeling inside - without falling into clichés. A beautiful backdrop for what can safely be called the 'party of the year'.
On the culinary front, the event also opted for authenticity. The snacks were sophisticated, with a nod to Ostend, the port and the fish market. Meanwhile, in the gin bar, all kinds of varieties and cocktails based on Ostend Gin flowed richly.
A strong statement came through the selection of the 100 Ostendians: people who gave, still give and connect the city colour. Many of them were present, visibly touched by their place in the story. The Ostendian invites its guests to get to know these people - through portraits, stories and subtle interior references. Each of the 100 Ostendians was given its own room. Thus, each stay also becomes an exploration of the soul of the city. Naturally, selfies of the numerous well-known Ostendians circulated in no time - often from their 'own' room.
With The Ostendian, Ostend gains not just another hotel, but an urban anchor point where hospitality, culture, encounters and experience merge. A new standard by the sea, on an Ostend scale.
