Vandal-resistant solutions, water saving, and easy maintenance are central
In hospitality and leisure environments such as hotels, sports centres, and youth centres, sanitary installations often face significant wear and tear. Intensive use, ease of maintenance, and hygiene play a crucial role. Therefore, during the renovation of Youth Centre De Kaller in Zutendaal, a deliberate choice was made for robust sanitary solutions that are both durable and vandal-proof.
The youth centre, a meeting place for young people in the Limburg municipality since 1990, reopened its doors in early 2025 after a thorough renovation. The entire sanitary facilities were also renewed with solutions from DELABIE, specialists in sanitary solutions for heavily used public spaces.
The renovation works aimed to modernise the building and prepare it for the future. According to the technical department of Zutendaal municipality, a strong focus was placed on sustainability and the longevity of the installations.
The sanitary facilities were completely renovated by the municipal technical department, ensuring they can last for many years to come. The choice of the right materials played a significant role in this.
In public buildings such as youth centres, sports centres, or event venues, sanitary facilities must be able to withstand intensive use and potential damage. Therefore, sanitary appliances and accessories made of stainless steel 304 were chosen. This material is bacteriostatic, very durable, and particularly suitable for environments with a high number of visitors.

An additional challenge in public facilities is vandalism. In the past, the youth centre faced this, making robustness an important criterion when choosing products.
Sanitary appliances such as sinks, toilets and urinals made of stainless steel are designed to withstand heavy loads and intensive use. Furthermore, the fastenings of these installations are hidden, so they are inaccessible to users and therefore less vulnerable to damage.
For hospitality venues, this means a clear added value. Robust installations not only reduce the risk of damage but also limit maintenance costs and downtime.
In addition to robustness, water management also played an important role in the project. Modern sanitary installations make it possible to significantly reduce water consumption without compromising on comfort.
Mechanical self-closing taps were installed, including the TEMPOSOFT 2 washbasin tap. These automatically turn off after a few seconds, meaning water doesn't run unnecessarily while washing your hands, for example.
A system with anti-blocking safety was also chosen for toilet flushes. With this system, the flush is only activated when the push button is released.
This way, misuse is prevented and you save water at the same time.
Electronic flushing systems were also used for urinals, which detect usage and adjust the flushing process accordingly. This ensures flushing only occurs when necessary, further reducing water consumption.

In buildings where volunteers or staff are responsible for maintenance, ease of use is an important factor. This was also the case at Youth Centre De Kaller, where young people themselves are involved in the management and rental of the spaces.
Sanitary solutions with standardised parts, limescale-resistant aerators, and built-in filters make maintenance easier and limit the need for interventions.
For hospitality operators, that's a significant advantage. Less maintenance means lower operational costs and higher system reliability.

Although the project is situated in a youth centre, its principles are perfectly applicable to other hospitality environments such as hotels, leisure centres, sports facilities, or event halls.
Intensive use, hygiene, and sustainability are important factors everywhere. By choosing robust materials, water-saving technology, and low-maintenance installations, operators can make their sanitary infrastructure future-proof.
With solutions specifically developed for public and high-traffic areas, DELABIE demonstrates how sanitary ware can not only be functional but can also contribute to more sustainable and efficient management of hospitality locations.
