Oostwegel Collection and the local community reach agreement on a revised expansion plan for the Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht

Oostwegel Collection and neighbourhood reach agreement on revised expansion plans for Kruisherenhotel Maastricht

Oostwegel Collection and a delegation from the neighbourhood surrounding the Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht have jointly developed an adjusted plan for the expansion of the Kruisherenhotel Maastricht with ‘Sociëteit De Stuers’. With this agreement, both parties are consciously choosing cooperation and a future-proof solution.

Over the past few months, initiator Camille Oostwegel and representatives of the neighbourhood, along with advisor Huub Smeets, have engaged in intensive and constructive discussions. The aim of these discussions was to reach an agreement on a plan that respects both the hotel's ambitions and the liveability of the surrounding area. This process has now resulted in an alternative plan that has been agreed upon by both parties.

For Oostwegel Collection, this means a more compact new build and an adjustment to the project's scale. The number of additional hotel rooms will be reduced from 52 to approximately 30. The main functions from the original plan will be retained, including the head office of Oostwegel Collection, a new gastronomic restaurant concept, a multipurpose hall, and a fitness facility.

For the neighbourhood, the amended plan represents a clear improvement in its integration with the surroundings. Due to the smaller scale and more compact design, the impact on traffic and noise is limited, and the plan fits better with the character of the district. Architecture firm Mecanoo is once again responsible for the design of the expansion of the Kruisherenhotel.

Camille Oostwegel, owner and general manager of Oostwegel Collection: “This result shows what is possible when you truly listen to each other. Together with the neighbourhood, we have developed a plan that accommodates both our ambitions and their concerns. I am pleased that we have taken this step together and can look forward with confidence.”

The local residents: “We are pleased with the smaller scale and lower buildings of the inner courtyard in the revised plan, specifically a square development with a height of 13.8 metres. The height of the new construction in the original plan was 21 metres. We also think it's important that it has been established that heat stress will not increase due to the new plan, based on a baseline measurement. As local residents, we have long advocated for this and are convinced that this revised plan, with the support of the immediate surroundings, is the only correct and efficient way for all parties to realise this sensitive infill project.”.

Oostwegel Collection will resubmit the amended plan to the municipality. It is expected that, after the conclusion of the permit process at the beginning of 2028, restoration and renovation can commence.
